Women Artists
From The Huntington’s art and library collections, this grouping features a selection of European, American, and Asian works made by women artists from the 18th century to the present. This set sheds light on a wide range of Eastern and Western objects produced by female painters, illustrators, designers, quiltmakers, embroiderers, photographers, calligraphers, and owners and managers of workshops who left an indelible mark on the world of art and literature. These works document the groundbreaking contributions of local and international female artists who broke with societal expectations, challenged norms, and in many cases, advocated for change to build a career in their field. The selection also includes a few artworks that were inspired by trailblazing women. The pieces in this collection act as records of the power of female artistic expression, creativity, and vision throughout the centuries.
