White Headed Pigeon
Rare Books
Original copper plate engraved by Robert Havell Sr., titled "White Headed Pigeon" and numbered CLXXVII from John James Audubon's "Birds of America". This plate was the original copper plate used to print the images for both the White-crowned Pigeon and the White Headed Pigeon images in Audubon’s Birds of America. The copper plate is 1/16” (.16 cm) thick. Robert Havell, Sr., a London engraver, produced this image and others through a combination of techniques, incorporating engraving, etching and aquatint – a printmaking technique that involves using acid to make marks in the plate. This allows for subtle tonal shades in the final print that is pulled from the plate.
