Thirty-one of these letters were written by Cobbe. The letters relate to a variety of topics including: Cobbe's work with the anti-vivisection movement, literature, politics, Mary Somerville, the Ethnological Society of London, and other personal subjects. She mentions her partner Mary Lloyd several times (Mary is also the addressee of one letter). Addressees include author Sarah Sharp Heaton Hamer (Phyllis Browne); British novelist James Payn (letter mentions Sir Leslie Stephen); English surgeon and pathologist Sir James Paget; Lady Deborah Bowring; Dr. Reinhold Rost; surgeon Dr. Robert Dunn; Reverend Henry Allon; Archdeacon F. W. Farrar; and fellow suffragette Helen Taylor. There are also two letters by English religious philosopher James Martineau (one to Frances and one to Mary) and one letter by British scholar Francis William Newman to Frances.

The majority of the collection consists of manuscripts and letters written by leading British Victorian political, scientific, and literary figures; there is also a small amount of material by American, French, German, and Polish writers. The manuscripts include poems by Daniel Webester, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Helen Maria Williams. The political correspondents include John Bright, Hugh McCalmont Cairns (Earl Cairns), George William Villiers (Earl of Clarendon), Frances Power Cobbe, Richard Cobden, William Ewart Gladstone, George Cornewall Lewis, Henry Temple (Viscount Palmerston), and George Frederick Robinson (Marquess of Ripon).

The collection is made up of material gathered by Knox Mellon for his dissertation about Job Harriman. The papers chiefly deal with Job Harriman; Frances Nacke Noel; socialism; the Llano del Rio Colony; labor and union issues; and suffrage and women's rights. Some other subjects covered are: Los Angeles politics, the Los Angles Times Building bombing, utopian communities, and women in the labor movement in both Mexico and the United States. The manuscripts include essays, research notes, draft pages for Mellon's dissertation, and personal interviews with individuals who knew Job Harriman. The correspondence is mainly made up of letters written by Knox Mellon requesting information about Job Harriman. There are also letters related to Frances Nacke Noel, her family, and her activities. Other authors included are: Eugene V. Debs, Joe Hill, Robert V. Hine, J.S. Holliday, Walter Millsap, Alice Park, and Maud Younger.

Margaret Deland correspondence

The collection is comprised solely of correspondence, the vast majority of which was written by Margaret Deland to her first cousin, Madeleine Romaine Wade Poindexter. The only other author represented in the collection is American writer Alice Wellington Rollins (1847-1897) who also wrote letters to Poindexter. Issues discussed within the correspondence include nineteenth century authors and their works, the status of women in religious life, female suffrage and women's rights, United States politics and government, and Deland's personal life.
