    Arguments of the 12 judges in the Exchequer Chamber about ship money : manuscript

    Manuscripts

    A manuscript copy of the court proceedings in the 1637 case "R v Hampden, 3 Howell State Trials, 825," in which Buckinghamshire gentleman landowner John Hampden refused to pay ship money levied by Charles I. The case was finally heard by all 12 judges in the Court of Exchequer Chamber; Hampden lost the case, seven judges to five. This copy is in a modern binding with marbled covers; on spine: "Parliamentary Papers. M.S.," spine is damaged and fragile; with modern pencil autograph notes on verso of first page.

    Register of admissions and minute book

    Manuscripts

    A register of admissions for the Sadlers' Company (Shrewsbury, Shropshire), 1739-1854. The volume also contains list of Freeman of the Company since 1685, oaths, minutes of meetings, correspondence, etc. Please note: the volume has been placed in an archival box as it is very fragile; the spine is damaged, the covers and some pages are loose, please handle carefully.

    A music-related volume of autograph text containing an index, titles of works performed, notes on musical events, and lists of singers and musical instruments; there are 99 pages of text with additional blank pages. Please note: the spine is heavily damaged and flaking and both covers are loose; also enclosed: 11 pages of autograph notes previously laid inside front cover and various pages.

    Commission under the great seal of England appointing Sir Arthur Aston as sergeant major of horse

    Manuscripts

    This commission, against those rebelling against the King, appoints Sir Arthur Aston as Sergeant Major of Troops of Horse. The commission and wax Great Seal are housed in a (19th century?) burgundy box, which also contains an embroidered linen handkerchief. Please note the seal is slightly damaged with the right upper edge missing and the box cover has come loose from the spine. For protection, the burgundy box has been placed in a modern archival box which needs to be handled carefully and remain flat.
