    Lepidoptera of Central America: notebooks

    Manuscripts

    These two volumes include field drawings of Lepidoptera of Central America. It includes the genus and species of each lepidopteran observed with a description of the insect, location found, wing illustrated in color, and sex. Scale marker present for each illustration with tissue guards. Areas covered are Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Honduras. The author is unknown but it is attributed to a "Dr. Ellis." It is undated, but presumed to be from the early 20th century.

Shirley indicates first date is 1670, a second plate was created in 1680 with Nova Guinea and Quiri Regio in the left hemisphere. See Shirley, map 451. Decorative map surround.     Manuscript map done by Emmanuel Hess depicting a portion of the Mohawk River with Canada Creek and showing Fort Herkimer (sometimes spelled "Herkemans") on the north bank, along with several outbuildings: barn, houses, church, etc. The map shows the outline of the old fort destroyed by Webb in his retreat from defeat at Oswego. Also shows the road to Albany.
